You’ve no doubt seen and heard these acronyms before. There’s a lot of talk about search engine marketing (SEM), search engine optimisation (SEO) and pay-per-click advertising (PPC). A lot of it is arcane and technical. We completely understand that to many companies it’s just a minefield.
But it’s actually pretty simple!
Search Engine Marketing is all about getting your site visible on search engine results pages when users are looking for your products or services.
There are two distinct ways of doing this:
1. Paid Search Marketing
Pay to have small ads placed on search results pages (the most popular form being pay-per-click). Read more about PPC
2. Free Search Results Placement
Use certain website tactics to ensure that your website appears as close to the top of the search results page as possible – known as SEO. Read more about SEO
Used together, SEO and PPC can enable you to tremendously increase the number of visitors to your business website.
Why do I need this?
The old truism that if you build it they will come (or, more optimistically, beat a path to your door), doesn’t quite hold as true on the Internet. There are millions of websites and the most common method that people use to find relevant information is to type a keyword or phrase into a search engine. If your website can’t be found, or if it appears on page 42 of the search engine results, not only won’t they come, they won’t even know you are there.
Understanding and implementing the things that make one site rank higher than another on search engines results page makes your site massively more findable to potential customers. Which is why establishing and following an SEO strategy is vital to the success of your business website.
